Packing the hospital bag: a complete checklist for a calm preparation

Approaching the due date is a time of heartfelt anticipation and practical preparation. One of the key tasks in the final weeks of pregnancy is packing the hospital bag. A well‑chosen contents will not only ensure comfort during the stay at the hospital, but also allow the mother to focus on the most important thing – the birth of the baby. We offer a detailed action plan that will help you forget nothing.

When to start packing?

The ideal time to pack the bag is the beginning of the third trimester, roughly at 32–36 weeks of pregnancy. Labor can start suddenly, even if the estimated due date is still ahead. It’s better to be ready in advance rather than rush at the last minute. If the pregnancy is complicated or the doctor has prescribed certain restrictions, the bag should be packed even earlier.

What to pack for mom: basic items

The main set of items for mom can be divided into several categories for convenience. We recommend using separate cosmetic bags or pouches.

  • Documents: passport, identification code, pregnant woman's medical record, insurance policy, exchange card, certificate of examination results (if any), referral to the hospital.
  • Labor items: comfortable shirt or T‑shirt, warm socks, hygienic pad, bottle of water.
  • Post‑labor items: two‑three night shirts with nursing snaps, disposable maternity underwear, post‑delivery sanitary pads, special nursing bra.
  • Hygiene: toothbrush and toothpaste, soap, shampoo, towel, liquid soap, nipple cream (if you plan to breast‑feed), wet wipes.
  • Comfort: your own pillow (if needed), phone and charger, book or magazine, light snack (nuts, dried fruit).

What to bring for the newborn?

For the baby it is enough to take a minimum of items, as hospitals usually provide swaddles and clothing for the first days. The basic set:

  • Rompers and bodysuits (2–3 pcs, size 56–62).
  • Hat and mittens.
  • Swaddles (cotton and fleece).
  • Disposable newborn diapers (small pack).
  • Wet wipes and diaper rash cream.
  • Cover or jumpsuit for discharge (consider the weather).

After discharge from the hospital a new, equally important stage begins – newborn care. Useful tips on this topic can be found here: Newborn care.

What not to bring?

To avoid overloading the bag, it’s better to skip some items:

  • Cosmetics and perfumes – they may cause an allergic reaction in the baby.
