Baby shower (бебі шауер) — is a wonderful and warm tradition that came to us from the West and is becoming increasingly popular in Ukraine each year. It is a party in honor of the expectant mother and her baby, organized shortly before the birth. The main purpose of this celebration is to "shower" (англ. to shower) the mother with love, support, care, and, of course, gifts that will be useful in the first months of the child's life. It is a wonderful opportunity to gather close ones, share the joy of anticipation, and create unforgettable memories before the start of a new, exciting stage of life.
Step 1: Planning Basics — when, who, and where?
Before diving into the world of décor and games, it's worth deciding on the key organizational aspects.
- When to hold it? The ideal time for a baby shower is the third trimester, approximately at 30‑36 weeks of pregnancy. The belly is already nicely visible, creating a special atmosphere, but the mother still has enough energy for celebration.
- Who organizes? Traditionally, the party is organized by close friends or relatives of the expectant mother. However, today couples more often organize the celebration themselves, turning it into a joint family event.
- Who to invite? Make a list of the closest people whose presence you would like to share. This can be a purely "girls' gathering" or a mixed party involving the husband and other men from family and friends.
- Where to celebrate? The coziest option is at home. Alternatives can be renting a small café, a photo studio, or, if the weather permits, organizing a picnic outdoors.
Step 2: Choosing a Theme — creating the party atmosphere
The theme helps unite all elements of the celebration — from invitations to décor and treats — into a single harmonious picture.
- Classic themes: "Stork Has Arrived", "Teddy Bear Picnic", "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star".
- Gender‑neutral themes: "Welcome to the World", "Adventure Awaits" with travel elements, "Wild One" in a safari style.
- Original ideas: "Our Sweet Bee" (in yellow‑black tones), "Little Star in the Sky" (space theme).
Step 3: Entertainment and Games — fun without awkwardness
Forget outdated and uncomfortable contests. A modern baby shower is about pleasant interaction and creativity.
- "Wishes for the baby": Prepare nice cards on which guests can write their warm wishes for the child’s future.
- Creative workshop: Set up a station where guests can paint white onesies or bibs with fabric paints. It's both fun and practical!
- "Library for the baby": Ask each guest, instead of a card, to bring their favorite children's book with a signed note. This way you’ll collect the first library for your child.
- "Guess the baby puree": A fun game for the brave. Remove the labels from several jars of baby food and ask guests to guess the flavor.
- "Children's photos": Ask guests to bring their childhood photos. Hang them up and let everyone guess who is who.
Step 4: Treats and Gifts
What’s on the table?
A buffet format with light snacks works best: canapés, tartlets, cupcakes, fruit. The centerpiece can be a themed cake or a candy bar. Set up a "Mom-osa bar", where alongside champagne for guests there will be a tasty non‑alcoholic punch or lemonade for the expectant mother.
What to give?
A baby shower is a great opportunity to help parents with pre‑birth purchases. To avoid unnecessary or duplicate gifts, expectant parents can create a wish list (wish list) with specific items they need. This greatly simplifies the choice for guests and helps with financial preparation for the arrival of the baby.
A Keepsake from the Celebration
Don’t forget small favors for guests as a reminder of your celebration: they can be themed gingerbread cookies, tiny candles, handmade soap, or packets of flower seeds with the inscription "Let me grow".
Most importantly, remember that a baby shower is not a test for a perfect party, but a celebration of love and support. It is one of the warmest moments on the path of preparing for the arrival of a child, which will fill you with positive emotions and the feeling that you are surrounded by loving people.
