Week 14: Development of the Sensory Organs
Week fourteen is a time of active development of your baby's sensory organs.
Baby size: Lemon (40-45 mm)
Baby development
Fluffy Peach with Active Little Hands
Your baby not only grows in length but also becomes more "fluffy". Its body begins to be covered with lanugo — a thin, colorless hair that helps regulate body temperature.
What’s happening this week:
- Lanugo: This delicate hair appears, usually disappearing before birth.
- Neck: The neck becomes longer, and the chin is no longer pressed tightly against the chest.
- Movements: He can suck his thumb, swallow amniotic fluid (training the digestive system), and actively move his hands.
- Sex: Reproductive organs are fully formed, but determining sex by ultrasound is still difficult.
Your fetus weighs about 40-45 grams, and its length from crown to heel is approximately 9 centimeters.
Every detail of this process is impressive. Follow it in our article "Fetal Development by Week".
Changes for mom
"Pregnancy Glow" and New Sensations
The energy surge continues. You may notice that your skin looks better and your hair is thicker. This is the classic "pregnancy glow," caused by increased circulation and hormones.
What you may notice:
- Growing belly: It’s now hard to hide. Your uterus is roughly halfway between the pubic bone and the navel.
- Pain in round ligaments: May intensify when changing body position. This is a normal sign of uterine growth.
- Constipation and bloating: Progesterone continues to slow digestion, so these symptoms may persist.
- Mood improvement: Emotional tone stabilizes; you feel more balanced and happy.
Your body is undergoing amazing transformations. Read more about them in the article "Physical Changes of the Body During Pregnancy".
Overview
Week 14: First Expressions and Energy Surge
Week fourteen continues the "honeymoon phase" of your pregnancy. You are probably feeling much better, and your little one is growing and developing at a cosmic speed.
Your fetus is now the size of a nectarine or the palm of your hand. Although its eyes are still closed, it can already squint, frown, and even pucker its lips! These are the first workouts of the facial muscles.
For you, this week is a time of activity and planning. Your belly becomes increasingly noticeable, and you can proudly show it off in new, comfortable clothing. The returned energy lets you enjoy life and prepare for upcoming changes.
This is the week when your baby starts expressing "emotions" even before birth. These first expressions are a remarkable proof of how complex its development is becoming.

Tips for mom
Time for Health, Beauty, and Planning
When you feel good, it’s easier to focus on the important aspects of preparation.
Ideas for this week:
- Get active. This is an ideal time for regular workouts. They will help alleviate back pain, boost mood, and prepare you for labor.
- Watch your nutrition. You need only about 300‑350 extra calories per day. Choose quality foods, not “eating for two.”
- Consider prenatal classes. Now is a great time to start looking for and signing up for them.
- Buy comfortable shoes. Your feet may swell a bit due to edema, so low‑heel comfortable shoes are a must‑have.
Physical activity is your best friend in the second trimester. Read about safe and beneficial exercises in the article "Physical Activity and Exercises".
Tips for partner
From Support to Active Participation
Now that she’s full of energy, you can move from simple support to jointly implementing plans.
What you can do together:
- Enroll in parenting classes together. Your presence there is very important. It shows you’re ready to be a full partner in parenting.
- Help her with household chores. Even if she feels well, she shouldn’t lift heavy objects or stand for long periods.
- Give her a foot massage. At the end of the day her feet may get tired and swollen. Your massage will be priceless.
- Discuss labor. Start exploring the topic of partner‑supported labor together to understand what your role will be.
