The nineteenth week is a time of active brain and nervous system development.
Baby size: Mango (65-70 mm)
Baby development
Little explorer with a protective coating
Your baby is becoming increasingly resilient and active. The vernix protective layer on its skin is its personal "spacesuit".
What’s happening this week:
- Vernix caseosa: This white coating protects the skin from becoming soggy and helps maintain body temperature.
- Nervous system: Brain development is in full swing, refining connections between neurons and muscles.
- Limbs: The proportions of arms and legs become more appropriate relative to the body.
- Reproductive system: If you’re having a girl, about 6 million egg cells are already formed in her ovaries.
Your fetus weighs about 240 grams and measures over 15 centimeters in length.
Changes for mom
Skin changes and ligament pain
Your body continues to adapt to the growing belly, which can bring new sensations and visible changes.
What you may notice:
- Skin pigmentation: You may notice darkening of the nipples, melasma, as well as the appearance of a dark line on the abdomen (linea nigra) or pigmented spots on the face (chloasma).
- Round ligament pain: Sharp but short‑lasting side pain during sudden movements may become more frequent.
- Dizziness: Due to blood‑pressure changes you may still experience dizziness.
- Increased appetite: Hunger can be your constant companion.
Pigmentation is a common phenomenon. To learn how to care for your skin during this period, read the article "Beauty, Care and Style During Pregnancy".
Overview
Week 19: Development of the Senses
The nineteenth week is a time when your baby actively explores the world using rapidly developing sense organs. Its brain creates specialized areas for smell, taste, hearing, sight, and touch.
Your fetus is now the size of a large tomato or mango. It is covered with vernix (vernix caseosa) — a white, syrup‑like substance that protects its delicate skin from constant exposure to amniotic fluid.
For you, this week is a time of noticeable changes. The belly is steadily growing, and you are likely already feeling the baby’s movements. This is a period of emotional uplift and active preparation for meeting your little one.
Your child is already gathering information about the world. The sounds it hears and even the flavors that enter the amniotic fluid from your food shape its first impressions.
The second trimester continues, offering you many pleasant moments. Learn more about this stage in our detailed overview "Second Trimester: What You Need to Know".
Tips for mom
Preparing for the ultrasound and caring for comfort
An important examination is approaching, and the growing belly requires more attention to your own comfort.
What to do:
- Prepare for the anatomical ultrasound. It’s coming very soon. Make a list of questions for the doctor, including about the baby’s sex if you want to know it.
- Move smoothly. To avoid ligament pain, try not to make sudden movements; get up from the bed or chair slowly.
- Protect your skin from the sun. Use a high‑SPF cream to prevent increased pigmentation.
- Eat a balanced diet. Satisfy your appetite with healthy food. Don’t forget iron to avoid anemia (eat red meat, spinach, legumes).
Each examination is an important step. Be ready for them by reading our material on screenings during pregnancy.
Tips for partner
Nest builder and emotional support
This is a great time to start creating a cozy space for the baby together and to support your partner.
Your role in joint preparation:
- Plan the nursery together. Discuss colors, furniture, décor. It can be a very creative and unifying process.
- Be patient with her emotions. Changes in appearance may cause her insecurity. Give her compliments, tell her she’s beautiful.
- Take on part of the heavy household work. Rearranging furniture, cleaning — your help is very welcome right now.
- Offer your help in choosing a doctor for the baby. Start gathering reviews and recommendations together.
Preparing the home for the baby’s arrival is more than just renovation. It’s creating an atmosphere of love. Ideas can be found in the article "Home and Room Preparation".
