From Cell to Blastocyst: The Beginning of the Journey
Fertilization has just occurred, forming a single‑celled organism — zygote. It contains 46 chromosomes: 23 from you and 23 from your partner. At this moment the sex, eye color, hair color, and many other unique traits of the baby are determined.
The zygote wastes no time and immediately begins dividing while traveling from the fallopian tube to the uterus. This journey takes several days.
Stages of its transformation:
- First 2 cells, then 4, 8, 16...
- Soon it becomes a morula — a compact ball of cells resembling a mulberry.
- Closer to the end of the week the morula turns into a blastocyst — a hollow sphere with fluid inside.
In the form of a blastocyst, about the size of a pinhead, your future baby prepares for the next important step — implantation into the uterine wall.
This amazing process is driven by a precise mechanism, which we describe in the article about ovulation and conception.
Changes for mom
Your Body: Calm Before the (Hormonal) Storm
In the third week you will most likely notice no changes. Your body has not yet started producing the pregnancy hormone (hCG) in sufficient amounts to cause any symptoms.
Behind the scenes the main player is progesterone. It is produced by the corpus luteum (the remnant of the follicle after ovulation). Its job is to keep the uterine lining soft and ready to receive the blastocyst.
Some women toward the end of this week may notice faint pink or brown discharge — the so‑called implantation bleeding. This occurs when the blastocyst attaches to the uterine wall. However, this phenomenon is not observed in everyone.
Don’t worry if you feel nothing. This is completely normal. Give nature time to do its work.
Learning to recognize the subtlest body signals is a useful skill. We write about one key method in the article "How to Track Your Cycle".
Overview
Week 3: Fateful Meeting
This is the week when a true miracle occurs. Right now, in complete silence and secrecy, fertilization takes place.
A swift sperm reaches the egg waiting for it in the fallopian tube, and from their union a new, unique life is born.
You still feel absolutely nothing and don’t even suspect the grand event. On a sensory level this week is no different from a normal one.
However, inside you already exists a cell that carries the full genetic code of the future person — your baby.
This fateful meeting is a direct consequence of the event of the previous week. To understand exactly how everything happens, read our detailed article "What is ovulation?".
Tips for mom
Act as If You’re Already Pregnant
This is the so‑called “two‑week waiting period,” and the best strategy now is to take care of yourself as if your hope has already come true.
Your focus for this week:
- Keep taking vitamins. Folic acid is incredibly important right now, as cells are dividing at a rapid pace.
- Eat clean. Avoid raw fish, unpasteurized cheeses, and meat delicacies. Behave as if you have already received a positive test.
- Zero alcohol. There is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy, and this period is critically important for cell formation.
- Resist the temptation to take a pregnancy test. hCG levels are still too low, and you will most likely get a false‑negative result, which will only upset you.

Tips for partner
Support in “Zen” Mode
The “two‑week waiting period” can be stressful for both. Your main role now is to be a source of calm and support.
How you can help:
- Distract and entertain. Don’t let every conversation turn into “So, do you feel anything?” Plan a movie outing, a walk in the park, or cook something tasty together.
- Be a patient listener. She may share her hopes or worries. Just listen, hug, and say that you’re in this together.
- Watch the home atmosphere. Try to avoid stressful situations or arguments. Calm now is your shared priority.
- Lead by example. Continue living a healthy lifestyle together with her. Your solidarity is a powerful signal of care.
The start of the journey is always a special time. Read our introductory post on the blog to feel the vibe of our project.
