Week 32: Brain Development
The thirty‑second week is a time of active brain development and cognitive functions.
Baby size: Watermelon (130-135 mm)
Baby development
Plump Cheeks and Real Nails
Your baby continues to accumulate fat, which smooths his skin and makes his cheeks plump. The soft lanugo hair that covered his body is gradually disappearing.
What’s happening this week:
- Nails: Real nails are now present on the hands and feet.
- Hair: The baby may already have noticeable hair, although some babies are born almost bald.
- Bones: The skeleton is fully formed, but the bones are still soft and flexible, which will help ease passage through the birth canal.
- Vision: Pupils can dilate and constrict in response to light.
Your fetus weighs about 1.7 kg and measures over 42 cm in length.
Changes for mom
More Workouts, Less Space
Your body continues to change, adapting to the needs of a rapidly growing baby. This can bring on new sensations or intensify familiar ones.
What you may notice:
- Increased Braxton‑Hicks contractions: Your uterus is training more actively.
- Shortness of breath and heartburn: These symptoms may peak, as the uterus sits very high.
- Pelvic pain: Joint relaxation can cause discomfort while walking.
- Weight gain: You may gain about 0.5 kg per week, and a large portion of that weight belongs to the baby.
Weight gain is an important indicator, but it should stay within the normal range. Learn more in the article "Weight Gain During Pregnancy".
Overview
Week 32: Dress Rehearsal
In the thirty‑second week your baby is actively preparing for life outside, doing daily "training". He practices breathing, swallowing, sucking, and even blinking — everything he will need in the first minutes after birth.
He is now the size of a large Chinese cabbage. He has less and less room to turn, so he is probably already taking the final position — usually head down.
For you this week is a time of active preparation and possibly increased fatigue. Your body is working at full capacity, supporting the child's growth and getting ready for delivery. It is important to listen to its signals and get plenty of rest.
Your baby is a diligent student. Every movement, every hiccup is part of an important training that will give him a successful start in the new world.
You are on the home stretch. To know what to expect at this stage, read our detailed overview "Third Trimester: What You Need to Know".
Tips for mom
Preparing for Feeding and Learning to Relax
This is a great time to focus on preparing for newborn care and mastering techniques that will help you during labor.
What to do:
- Visit a lactation consultant. If possible, get professional advice before delivery.
- Practice breathing. Spend time each day training the breathing techniques you learned in classes. This will help you calm down and release tension.
- Eat small meals. To combat heartburn, eat 5–6 times a day in small portions.
- Discuss with your doctor what to do if labor starts early. Simply knowing a plan of action will give you confidence.
