Concentration problems
Overview
Concentration problems: Why is it so hard to focus?
Attention concentration is the ability to consciously direct and maintain one's mental activity on a specific object or task, ignoring peripheral stimuli. In today's world, saturated with information and multitasking, complaints about concentration difficulties are extremely common. Often this is a consequence of lifestyle, but sometimes it can be a symptom of a medical or psychological condition.
Neurobiology of attention
Our ability to concentrate is primarily governed by the frontal lobes of the brain, specifically the prefrontal cortex. This region acts as the "executive director" of our brain. The neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine play a key role in regulating attention. Imbalances of these are at the core of conditions such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).
Causes of concentration impairment
The capacity to concentrate is a limited resource that can become depleted under the influence of many factors.
- Lifestyle:
- Chronic sleep deprivation: This is probably the main "killer" of concentration.
- Multitasking: Attempts to do several things at once do not train but exhaust the attention system.
- Poor nutrition and dehydration.
- Psychological states:
- Stress and anxiety: Anxious thoughts constantly "steal" part of our attention.
- Depression: Accompanied by reduced motivation and cognitive sluggishness.
- Medical conditions:
- ADHD: A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent problems with attention and/or hyperactivity.
- Anemia, hypothyroidism, hormonal changes (pregnancy).
Concentration impairment often goes hand in hand with memory problems, because effective memorization is impossible without attention.
