Bladder pain after childbirth

Overview

Bladder pain after childbirth

Pain and discomfort in the bladder area (lower abdomen, above the pubic bone) is a fairly common complaint in the postpartum period. Your urinary system has undergone significant strain during pregnancy and delivery, and it needs time to recover. Understanding possible causes of the pain will help you seek help promptly.

Possible causes of pain

  • Urinary tract infection (cystitis). This is the most common cause. Bacterial inflammation of the bladder causes a dull or sharp pain that worsens when the bladder fills and during urination. It is usually accompanied by other symptoms such as burning and frequent urges.
  • Trauma and swelling. Pressure from the baby's head during delivery can lead to swelling and bruising of the bladder and surrounding tissues. This pain is usually temporary and subsides within a few days.
  • Overstretching of the bladder. If you had difficulty urinating in the first days after delivery, the bladder may have been overfilled, leading to soreness of its walls.
  • Pain from uterine contractions. Sometimes intense postpartum uterine contractions, which are nearby, can be felt as bladder pain.

If the pain is severe, does not subside, or is accompanied by fever, chills, or blood in the urine, you should seek medical attention immediately, as this may indicate a serious infection. Do not ignore these signals during your postpartum recovery.
