Skin itching
Overview
Skin itching after childbirth: Causes and what to do
Skin itching can persist or even appear for the first time during the postpartum period. It can be a harmless phenomenon related to the body's recovery, or a symptom that requires attention. Understanding the possible causes will help you cope with the discomfort.
Most common causes of postpartum itching
- Healing: The process of healing sutures after an episiotomy (perineal pain) or a cesarean section (post‑cesarean pain) is always accompanied by itching. This is a normal sign of tissue regeneration.
- Dry skin: Hormonal changes, dehydration (especially during breastfeeding) and sleep deprivation can lead to severe dryness of the skin all over the body, causing itching.
- Stretch marks: Fresh stretch marks can itch intensely while the skin is healing.
- Exacerbation of dermatoses: Atopic dermatitis or eczema can flare up after childbirth due to stress and hormonal fluctuations.
- Postpartum urticaria: Sometimes acute urticaria can develop after delivery as an immune system reaction.
When can itching be dangerous?
In rare cases, severe itching without a visible rash that began during pregnancy can be a sign of cholestasis, which requires monitoring after delivery as well. If the itching is unbearable, accompanied by a rash, or worsens overall health, be sure to see a doctor. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Itching".
