Newborn Tremor

Overview

Newborn Tremor: When Is Shaking Normal?

Fine, rhythmic trembling of the chin, hands, or feet is a very common phenomenon in newborns. Parents often confuse it with seizures and become very frightened. However, in the overwhelming majority of cases this tremor, or shaking, is an entirely normal physiological condition related to the immaturity of the baby's nervous system.

Causes of Physiological Tremor

The newborn's nervous system is still in an active development stage. Nerve pathways are not yet fully covered by the myelin sheath, which is responsible for fast and precise impulse transmission. Because of this, signals from the brain to the muscles can encounter "obstructions," causing fine tremors. This condition intensifies when the baby is excited, crying, hungry, or cold.

How to Distinguish Tremor from Seizures?

This is a key question that concerns parents. There are several simple ways to differentiate these two conditions:

Feature Physiological Tremor (Normal) Seizures (Dangerous)
Stopping with Hand The tremor stops easily when you hold the baby's limb in your hand. The movements cannot be stopped physically; they continue.
Relation to Stimulus Usually occurs in response to a stimulus (crying, hunger, cold, changing clothes). Occur spontaneously, without an apparent cause.
Eye Movements Eyes remain calm, gaze is purposeful. May be accompanied by eye rolling, prolonged stare at a single point.

Physiological tremor usually diminishes significantly by the age of 3 months. If the shaking is very strong, does not cease, or appears after 3–4 months, it is a reason to consult a pediatric neurologist. Read about other congenital reflexes and their significance on our website.
