Mood changes in pregnant women
Overview
Mood changes in pregnant women: Emotional "swings"
The feeling of boundless happiness that suddenly turns to tears because of a touching advertisement, and then shifts to irritation over a trivial matter — a familiar picture? Emotional instability, or зміни настрою, is as classic a symptom of pregnancy as morning sickness. This is not your "whim" or weakness, but the result of a powerful hormonal reshuffling, fatigue, and a deep psychological adaptation process to upcoming life changes.
What’s happening inside?
At the core of emotional "swings" lies a whole set of causes:
- Hormonal surge: Hormone levels such as estrogen and progesterone increase hundreds of times during pregnancy. They directly affect neurotransmitters in the brain (serotonin, dopamine) that regulate mood. Such sharp fluctuations make the emotional background unstable, especially in the first trimester.
- Physical exhaustion: Constant втома, poor sleep (безсоння) and physical discomfort drain the nervous system, reducing its capacity for emotional regulation.
- Psychological adaptation: Pregnancy is one of the biggest transitional periods in a woman's life. The awareness of huge responsibility, worry for the child's health, anxiety before delivery, changes in the relationship with the partner — all constitute significant stress that manifests as emotional lability.
When are mood changes normal, and when are they not?
Light and moderate mood fluctuations are absolutely normal. However, if a depressed mood, дратівливість or apathy become dominant, last more than two weeks, and interfere with your functioning, this may be a sign of пренатальної депресії, which requires professional help. It is important to speak openly about your feelings and take care of your емоційний стан.
