Cough during pregnancy: Safe treatment and warning signs

Cough during pregnancy is not just an unpleasant symptom, but also a cause for concern. The expectant mother worries not only about her own discomfort but also asks: "Is it harmful to the baby?". It is important to know that the cough itself is not dangerous for the fetus, but its cause and treatment methods require special attention.

Most common causes of cough

  • Cold and upper respiratory infection. This is the most common cause. A weakened immune system makes a pregnant woman more vulnerable to viral infections.
  • Post‑nasal drip. Mucus from the nasal cavity (caused by rhinitis in pregnancy or allergy) runs down the back of the throat, irritating it and triggering a reflex cough.
  • Acid reflux (GERD). The backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus can irritate the throat and cause a dry, chronic cough, especially at night. This is a common problem due to heartburn in pregnancy.
  • Exacerbation of chronic diseases. Pregnancy can provoke flare‑ups of bronchial asthma.

Is cough dangerous for the baby?

The mechanical act of coughing (muscle contraction) cannot harm the child, who is safely protected in the womb. The danger lies not in the cough itself but in its cause:

  • High fever during an infection can be dangerous for the fetus, especially in the first trimester.
  • Bacterial infections (bronchitis, pneumonia) require treatment with antibiotics.
  • Strong, paroxysmal cough can increase uterine tone and cause discomfort.

Principles of safe treatment

The main rule — no self‑medication! Most common cough syrups, lozenges and combined cold remedies contain ingredients that are not recommended or are prohibited during pregnancy. Always consult a doctor who can suggest safe methods. Read about general principles for choosing medications in the article "Medications during pregnancy".
