Electrolyte imbalance in pregnant women
Overview
Salt and mineral imbalance during pregnancy: The importance of electrolytes
Electrolytes are minerals such as sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium that play a key role in maintaining fluid balance, transmitting nerve impulses, and muscle contraction. During pregnancy, the need for these minerals increases, and their balance becomes more fragile due to significant physiological changes in a woman's body.
Why does imbalance occur?
Most often, electrolyte imbalance in pregnant women is the result of excessive loss of fluids and salts.
- Severe nausea/vomiting: Frequent vomiting leads to loss not only of water but also of potassium, sodium, and chlorides. Severe nausea/vomiting (hyperemesis gravidarum) is a primary cause of serious electrolyte disturbances.
- Diarrhea: Also leads to significant losses of potassium and bicarbonates.
- Dehydration: Insufficient fluid intake against increased needs can lead to blood thickening and increased sodium concentration (hypernatremia).
- Kidney disease or preeclampsia: Can impair the kidneys' ability to regulate electrolyte levels.
Consequences of imbalance for mother and child
Even minor deviations from normal can cause unpleasant symptoms and risks.
- Magnesium and calcium deficiency: Is one of the main causes of painful leg cramps.
- Potassium deficiency (hypokalemia): Can cause weakness, cardiac rhythm disturbances.
- Sodium imbalance: Affects blood pressure and brain function.
Maintaining adequate fluid and electrolyte balance is critically important. Balanced nutrition and sufficient fluid intake usually help avoid these problems.
