Ringing in the ears in children aged 1-3 years

Overview

Ringing in the ears (tinnitus) in children 1-3 years: A hidden symptom

Tinnitus is a medical term that means the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, or other noise in the ears without an external sound source. In adults this symptom is fairly common, but in young children its diagnosis is extremely difficult. A child aged 1-3 years cannot complain about ringing in the ears, so doctors and parents can only suspect the problem based on indirect signs and the child's behavior.

Possible causes of tinnitus in toddlers

As in adults, tinnitus in children is not a disease but a symptom that can be caused by various conditions.

  • Ear infections: Acute or chronic middle ear otitis (middle ear infection) can cause temporary tinnitus.
  • Secretory otitis ("glue ear"): Fluid buildup behind the eardrum disrupts normal ear function and can be the source of noise.
  • Wax plug: Complete blockage of the ear canal can cause pressure and noise in the ear.
  • Exposure to loud noise: Acoustic trauma from very loud toys, music, or events can damage the sensitive cells of the inner ear.
  • Medication side effects: Some drugs can have ototoxic effects.

How can you suspect tinnitus in a child?

Since there is no direct complaint, the problem can be suspected if the child:

  • Appears irritated without an obvious reason.
  • Often holds or hits the ears when there are no signs of pain or infection.
  • Has hearing problems or difficulty concentrating.
  • Has sleep problems, because in quiet the noise can become more noticeable.

If you notice such behavior, it is worth discussing it with a pediatrician and an ENT specialist. Treatment is aimed not at the noise itself, but at eliminating its underlying cause.
