Vomiting in children aged 1-3 years
Overview
Vomiting in children aged 1-3 years: Causes and "red flags"
Vomiting in a toddler is always stressful for parents. Unlike the harmless spitting up in infants, vomiting in a child over one year is most often a sign of illness. It is an active, forceful reflex aimed at clearing the stomach, which can quickly lead to dehydration. Understanding the most common causes and knowing the warning signs will help you act correctly and calmly.
What is vomiting and why does it occur?
Vomiting is a complex reflex act coordinated by a specific center in the brain. It can be triggered by various factors, from infections to emotional stress. In children aged 1-3 years the most common cause is viral gastroenteritis.
- Gastroenteritis ("stomach flu"): It is the #1 cause. Viruses (rotavirus, norovirus) cause inflammation of the stomach and intestinal lining. Vomiting is often the first symptom, later followed by diarrhea and fever.
- Food poisoning: Occurs after eating food contaminated with bacteria or their toxins. Symptoms develop very quickly, within a few hours after the meal.
- Systemic infections: Many illnesses not related to the stomach can cause vomiting in the context of high fever. This can be ear infection, a urinary tract infection, or even pneumonia.
- Severe cough: Severe coughing fits can trigger the vomiting reflex.
When is vomiting dangerous?
A single episode of vomiting in a child who feels fine afterward is usually not cause for panic. However, there are "red flags" that require immediate medical attention:
- Signs of dehydration: lethargy, dry mouth, crying without tears, infrequent urination. This is the main danger of vomiting.
- Persistent vomiting: The child cannot retain even a small amount of fluid.
- Contents in the vomitus: Green or yellow color (bile) may indicate intestinal obstruction. Traces of blood or a "coffee grounds" appearance also require immediate attention.
- Severe abdominal pain, lethargy, high fever that does not subside.
