12th Month: First Birthday and First Steps!
One year! It's a huge milestone. Your child is transforming from a baby into a little toddler. They are taking their first steps, saying their first words, and actively showing their personality.
Overview
The first birthday is a celebration not only for the child but also for the parents who have successfully navigated this incredible, eventful, and challenging first year. Your baby officially becomes a toddler. This is a time to reflect on the amazing achievements and prepare for a new, equally exciting stage of development.
Baby development
Many children at this age begin walking independently, although their gait is still unsteady. They can build a tower of two blocks. Their vocabulary may range from 2 to 10 words. The child understands far more than they can express. They actively use gestures and intonation to communicate.
Milestones
- Takes first independent steps.
- Says first meaningful words.
- Drinks from a cup.
- Shows affection for favorite people and toys.
- Follows simple instructions.
Feeding
After one year, a child can transition to family meals. Breast milk or formula can still form the basis of the diet, but the main source of energy becomes a variety of solid foods.
Sleep
Most children at this age shift to a single daytime nap. A stable schedule and rituals are very important. Another sleep regression may occur, linked to mastering walking.
Safety
Home safety comes to the forefront. A walking child can reach places that were previously inaccessible. Check your home again.
Activities
Offer the child simple sorters, shape-sorting frames. Paint with finger paints. Go out a lot and explore the world together.
