4th month: Rolls and First Laughter

The fourth month brings new milestones: the baby learns to roll over, laughs loudly, and actively explores the world. Learn how to prepare for sleep regression.

Overview

The fourth month is a real breakthrough in physical development. Your baby becomes a little explorer, actively discovering the capabilities of their body. It is during this period that many infants achieve their first major motor milestone — rolling over. It is also the time of the first hearty laugh, which becomes the best reward for parents.

Baby development

The muscles have strengthened so much that the baby can roll from stomach to back, and some even back again. They confidently prop themselves up on straightened arms while lying on their stomach. They actively reach for toys and grasp them with both hands, bringing everything to their mouth. Visual development now allows them to see objects at a greater distance.

Milestones

  • Rolls from stomach to back.
  • Laughs loudly.
  • Recognizes their reflection in the mirror.
  • Begins to respond to their name.
  • Holds a toy and purposefully brings it to the mouth.

Feeding

Feeding intervals may increase. Watch for hunger cues. If you notice that the baby is starting to show interest in your food, it does not yet mean it’s time to introduce solid foods. Read about this in the article about introducing solids.

Sleep

Attention, sleep regression! Around 4 months, the baby’s sleep structure changes, becoming more adult-like. This can lead to temporary sleep disturbances. Our article "Sleep Regressions" will help you understand this process.

Safety

Remove the mobile from the crib, as the baby may be able to reach it. Do not leave small objects within reach. Create a safe floor space for rolling.

Activities

Play "peek-a-boo" to develop object permanence. Offer toys with different textures. Read short rhymes and sing. More ideas are in the article about developmental games.
