5th Month: Active Communication and First Attempts at Sitting

At the fifth month, the baby becomes even more social, and babbling appears. She/He actively explores objects and can make the first attempts to sit with support.

Overview

The fifth month is a period of active socialization and refinement of motor skills. Your little one is no longer just a passive observer, but an active participant in communication. He/She expresses emotions, "talks" in his/her own language, and increasingly gains control over his/her body. This is a time when the bond between you becomes even deeper.

Baby development

The baby confidently rolls over to both sides. While lying on the stomach, she/he can push up on straight arms. With support under the armpits, she/he steadies well on the legs. The first attempts to pull up into a sitting position appear. Development of fine motor skills allows the baby to transfer a toy from one hand to the other.

Milestones

  • Babbling emerges (repeating syllables like "ba-ba", "ma-ma").
  • Distinguishes "own" from "others".
  • Transfers objects from hand to hand.
  • Can sit briefly with support.
  • Responds actively to sounds and music.

Feeding

The primary nutrition is breast milk or formula. Continue monitoring signs of readiness for complementary feeding, but don’t rush. Curiosity about food does not yet indicate a ready digestive system.

Sleep

The sleep schedule becomes more predictable. Usually there are 2–3 daytime naps. Establishing clear bedtime rituals helps the baby fall asleep more easily.

Safety

Make sure the toys have no small parts that could be chewed off. Do not use baby walkers—they are unsafe and do not support proper development.

Activities

Offer toys that make sounds. Play finger games. Name the objects around you. Sing songs and dance with the baby in your arms.
