Does not sit in infants

Overview

Infant not sitting: Stages of skill acquisition and when to be concerned

The ability to sit independently is a huge leap in a child's development, opening up an entirely new perspective on the world. This skill indicates significant strengthening of the back, neck, and abdominal muscles, as well as the development of a sense of balance. Parents eagerly await this milestone, but it is important to understand that it is a gradual process with a wide range of normal.

Stages of sitting acquisition

A child does not start sitting perfectly in a single day. Several important stages precede it:

  • 4-5 months: The infant, lying on the stomach, confidently props up on straight arms and lifts the head and chest high. This is the “foundation” for a strong back. If you pull the infant by the hands from a supine position, they try to lift the head.
  • 6-7 months: This is the age when most children begin to sit with support (e.g., cushioned with pillows). Some children can sit briefly unaided, supporting themselves with hands forward (“tripod position”).
  • 8-9 months: Most infants already sit confidently without support for extended periods and can, while sitting, reach for toys without losing balance.

It is important to remember that you should not force a child to sit by padding with pillows if their muscles are not yet ready. This creates harmful stress on an unstrengthened spine. The child must show readiness for this stage themselves. Read about other major milestones of the first year in our guide.

How to help the child?

The best help is not to accelerate the process, but to create conditions for natural muscle strengthening:

  • Tummy time: continue to regularly place the infant on the stomach.
  • Floor play: Encourage the infant to reach for toys, roll over. This is the best training.
  • Pulling up by the hands: Gently pull the infant into a sitting position, observing how they control the head.

When should you see a doctor?

A reason to consult a pediatrician is when by 9-10 months the child makes no attempts to sit even with support, or sits with a very rounded back. This may be a sign of muscle hypotonia or other developmental delays that require specialist attention.
