Speech delay in infants

Overview

Speech development delay: From "agu" to first words

Speech development is one of the most fascinating processes in the first year of a child's life. It is not just the appearance of the first words, but a complex path that starts with the first cry and includes language comprehension, babbling, gestures, and finally meaningful words. It is important to understand the stages of this development in order to notice possible difficulties in time.

Stages of speech development up to one year

  • 2-3 months: "Cooing" (gurgling). The child produces vowel, prolonged sounds ("aaa", "uuu", "eee"), responds to mother's voice, turns head toward sound.
  • 4-6 months: Babbling. The child begins to combine vowel and consonant sounds, forming syllables ("ba-ba-ba", "ma-ma-ma"). They experiment with intonation and volume.
  • 7-9 months: Babbling becomes more complex and meaningful. The child begins to understand the word "no", responds to their name, imitates adult sounds.
  • 10-12 months: First meaningful words appear (usually "mama", "tata", "give"). The child understands simple requests ("give the pen"), uses gestures (waves "bye-bye", points with a finger).

More details about this path can be read in the article "From \"agu\" to first words".

How to stimulate speech development?

The best way is constant communication.

  • Talk to the child: Comment on your actions, name objects, tell what you see.
  • Read books: Even if the child does not yet understand words, they listen to your intonation and look at pictures. About this – in our blog "Reading with an infant".
  • Sing songs and lullabies.

"Red flags" of speech delay

It is advisable to consult a pediatrician and a child neurologist if by 12 months the child:

  • Does not babble.
  • Does not respond to their name.
  • Does not use any gestures for communication.
  • Does not respond to sounds (important to rule out hearing problems).

We also write about norms and warning signs in the blog "When will the child start talking?".
