Varicose veins after childbirth

Overview

Varicose veins after childbirth: Will they disappear?

If during pregnancy you encountered varicose vein dilation, you are probably very concerned about whether the beauty and lightness of your legs will return after delivery. The news here are mostly good: in most women the condition of the veins improves significantly within the first 3-4 months after the baby is born, and sometimes they disappear completely.

Why does the condition improve?

The improvement occurs thanks to the removal of the main causes that provoked varicose veins during pregnancy:

  • The mechanical pressure disappears: After delivery the uterus quickly contracts, freeing the veins in the pelvis. Blood flow in the legs is restored, and pressure in the veins drops significantly.
  • The hormonal background normalizes: The level of progesterone, which relaxed the vessel walls, drops sharply. Veins regain their normal tone.
  • The blood volume decreases: The total circulating blood volume gradually returns to the pre‑pregnancy norm, reducing the load on the vascular system.

What to do to accelerate recovery?

You can help your veins get back in shape. Preventive measures recommended during pregnancy remain relevant in the postpartum period:

  • Compression hosiery: Continue wearing compression stockings, especially if you spend a lot of time on your feet.
  • Physical activity: Gradual return to light exercises, especially walking, swimming, and leg exercises, improves venous drainage.
  • Rest with elevated legs: Use every opportunity to raise your legs above heart level.

If the varicose veins were severely pronounced or do not disappear within a year after delivery, it is advisable to see a phlebologist. Modern medicine offers effective and minimally invasive treatment methods. Read about overall physical recovery in our guide.
