Cyanosis in newborns
Overview
Cyanosis (skin bluing) in newborns
Skin bluing, or cyanosis, is a symptom that always causes serious concern among parents. It occurs when there is insufficient oxygen in the blood. It is important to be able to distinguish relatively safe peripheral cyanosis from dangerous central cyanosis.
Peripheral cyanosis (acrocyanosis)
This is bluing only of the baby's hands and feet, while the lips, tongue, and trunk remain pink. This is a very common and usually normal phenomenon in the first 24-48 hours of life. It is related to the immaturity of the circulatory system: the body directs blood to vital organs, and the limbs receive it last. Acrocyanosis intensifies when the baby is cold and disappears with warming.
Central cyanosis
This is a condition in which not only the skin but also the mucous membranes turn blue: lips, tongue, inner surface of the mouth. This is always a sign of a serious problem and indicates a general lack of oxygen in the body. Central cyanosis requires immediate medical attention.
Possible causes include:
- Respiratory system problems: Pneumonia, respiratory distress syndrome.
- Congenital heart defects.
- Severe infections (sepsis).
- Neurological problems.
If you notice bluing of the lips or tongue in your child, do not wait, but call emergency services immediately. This is one of the most important "red flags" in newborn health.
