Frequent urination
Overview
Frequent urination during pregnancy: Physiology of the symptom
If you have noticed that you know the location of every restroom in the city, and nighttime trips to the bathroom have become a regular ritual, congratulations — you are experiencing one of the most common and earliest symptoms of pregnancy. Frequent urination can appear as early as 4-6 weeks, accompany you throughout the entire term and has completely logical physiological explanations. This is not a sign of disease, but evidence that your body is actively adapting to the new condition.
Causes at different stages of pregnancy
The mechanism of this phenomenon changes depending on the trimester:
- First trimester: The main culprit in early terms is hormonal remodeling. The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) significantly increases blood flow in the pelvic area, causing the kidneys to work more efficiently and produce more urine. Additionally, the uterus already begins to press on the bladder.
- Third trimester: The cause is primarily mechanical. The uterus reaches its maximum size, and the baby's head exerts direct pressure on the bladder, considerably reducing its effective volume.
This is normal, but there are nuances: Differences from UTIs
It is important to be able to distinguish physiological frequent urination from symptoms of urinary tract infection (UTI). If, in addition to frequent urges, you feel pain or burning, seek a doctor immediately. It is important not to limit your fluid intake in an attempt to go to the bathroom less often. Adequate hydration is critically important for your health and the baby's health. Read more about pregnancy symptoms in our guide.
