Temper tantrums in children 1-3 years
Overview
Temper tantrums in children 1-3 years: Anatomy of an emotional storm
Temper tantrums, or tantrums, are a hallmark of early childhood. A loud scream, falling to the floor, tears, flailing arms and legs — this picture is familiar to virtually all parents. For adults this behavior may seem manipulative or "bad", but it is crucial to understand: a tantrum in a baby is not a conscious choice, but a neurological and emotional explosion. It indicates that the child's immature nervous system is overloaded with emotions it cannot yet handle on its own. It is a crisis that is a normal and necessary part of development.
What happens in the child's brain during a tantrum?
The child's brain develops unevenly. The emotional center (limbic system) matures much earlier than the rational center (prefrontal cortex), which is responsible for self‑control, planning and impulse inhibition. During a tantrum the "amygdala capture" occurs: the emotional brain takes full control, "shutting off" access to the rational part. The child at that moment cannot hear logical arguments, negotiate, or "pull themselves together". They are in a state of physiological stress.
Tantrum triggers: Why does a "short circuit" occur?
A tantrum is always a reaction to frustration or overload. Main causes at age 1‑3 years:
- Conflict of desires and abilities: The child wants to build a tall tower, but it falls. The child wants to put on a shoe by themselves, but cannot. This mismatch between "want" and "can" causes strong disappointment.
- Speech limitations: The toddler cannot explain their complex needs, wishes or feelings with words. This inability to be understood is a powerful trigger.
- Struggle for autonomy (negativism): This is the peak of the "I do it myself" crisis. The child protests any prohibitions and restrictions from adults, defending their newly born independence.
- Physiological state: Hunger, fatigue, pain or discomfort significantly lower the threshold of emotional resilience. Tantrums often occur when the child is not well rested or is hungry.
- Overload: Too many impressions, noise, people — all this exhausts the nervous system.
Understanding these mechanisms helps parents change their response: instead of fighting the tantrum, they learn to help the child get through this "storm". Often tantrums are accompanied by aggressive behavior, which is also a manifestation of emotional overload.
