Weight loss in children aged 1-3 years
Overview
Weight loss in children aged 1-3 years: Always a cause for concern
If a physiological decrease in appetite in infants is normal, then weight loss is always "red flag", which cannot be ignored. Unlike newborns, who physiologically lose weight in the first days, a child aged 1-3 years should steadily, albeit slowly, gain weight. Even a complete halt in weight gain for an extended period is a reason for thorough examination by a pediatrician.
Why does weight loss occur?
Weight loss means the child's body is expending more energy than it receives and absorbs. The causes can be varied, but they always need to be investigated together with a doctor.
- Acute illnesses: The most common cause of short-term weight loss. Any disease accompanied by vomiting, diarrhea and loss of appetite, leads to temporary thinning. After recovery, the child usually quickly regains the lost weight.
- Chronic digestive system diseases:
- Malabsorption: Conditions in which nutrient absorption in the intestine is impaired. This can be celiac disease (gluten intolerance), cystic fibrosis, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases.
- Food allergy: Severe allergy can cause such intense inflammation that food simply is not absorbed.
- Endocrine problems: For example, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) or type 1 diabetes.
- Parasitic infestations (worms).
- Psychological and social factors: Severe stress, unhealthy family atmosphere, or inadequate nutrition due to financial difficulties.
If you notice your child losing weight, the first step is a visit to a pediatrician. The doctor will take a medical history, examine the child, and order necessary tests to determine the cause.
