Nausea throughout the day: Why "morning" sickness isn’t always morning

Many people imagine pregnancy nausea as a short‑lived morning nausea that passes after breakfast. However for a significant number of women the reality is different: nausea can last the whole day, intensifying and then easing, turning the first weeks of pregnancy into a real ordeal. This phenomenon, known as "all-day sickness", is just a variation of the same nausea and has the same physiological causes.

Causes of constant nausea

At the core of this condition is the same hormonal reshuffling as in classic morning sickness. The rapid rise in hCG and estrogen are the main triggers. Why does nausea last all day for some women?

  • Blood sugar fluctuations: An empty stomach leads to a drop in sugar level, which is a powerful nausea trigger. If the intervals between meals are too long, nausea can return again and again.
  • Fatigue: Severe fatigue, typical of the first trimester, can greatly intensify the feeling of nausea.
  • Sensitivity to smells: Throughout the day you encounter many odors (food, perfume, household chemicals), each of which can provoke a nausea attack.
  • Multiple pregnancy: In women pregnant with twins or triplets, hCG levels are significantly higher, often leading to more intense and prolonged nausea.

Understanding that you are not "abnormal", but simply experiencing an individual reaction of your body, is the first step toward relief. More practical tips can be found in our blog "10 ways to survive nausea".
