Loss of appetite
Overview
Loss of appetite during pregnancy: When is it normal?
Loss of appetite during pregnancy can seem paradoxical, since everyone around talks about "eating for two". However, it is a fairly common symptom that has various causes depending on the stage of pregnancy. In most cases it is a temporary phenomenon, but sometimes it requires attention.
Causes of loss of appetite
- First trimester: The main culprits are nausea, vomiting and aversion to certain foods. When the very thought of food causes discomfort, and favorite dishes suddenly become repulsive, a decrease in appetite is completely natural. This is the most common cause, which usually resolves with the start of the second trimester.
- Third trimester: In later stages appetite may decrease again, but now for mechanical reasons. The enlarged uterus presses on the stomach, significantly reducing its volume. As a result, you may feel full even after a small portion of food.
- Heartburn: Severe heartburn can cause fear of eating, as you subconsciously associate meals with subsequent discomfort.
- Psychological factors: Stress, anxiety and emotional changes can also affect appetite.
It is important not to force yourself to eat large portions, but to focus on small, frequent, and nutritious snacks. Even if appetite is reduced, your balanced nutrition remains a priority.
