Hemorrhoids during pregnancy

Overview

Hemorrhoids during pregnancy: A delicate problem and effective solutions

Hemorrhoids are varicose dilatation of veins in the rectum and around the anus. This is an extremely common problem, affecting, according to various data, 25% to 50% of pregnant women, especially in the third trimester and in the first weeks after delivery. Although the topic is very delicate and uncomfortable to discuss, it is important to know that you are not alone, and there are effective and safe ways to relieve this condition.

Why do hemorrhoids occur so often specifically in pregnant women?

Pregnancy creates ideal conditions for the development of hemorrhoids due to a combination of several factors:

  • Increased blood volume and uterine pressure: During pregnancy the blood volume in the body significantly rises, creating additional load on the vessels. The enlarged uterus presses on the pelvic veins, especially the inferior vena cava, slowing the return of blood from the lower part of the body. This blood stasis leads to vein dilation in the legs (varicose veins) and in the rectal area.
  • Constipation: This is probably the main provoking factor. Constipation during pregnancy forces a woman to strain during defecation, sharply increasing pressure in the rectal veins.
  • Progesterone hormone: It relaxes vessel walls, making them more prone to dilation, and also slows intestinal motility, further contributing to constipation.
  • Labor process: Strong straining during pushing can trigger the appearance or worsening of hemorrhoids.

Types and symptoms of hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids can be internal (inside the rectum) and external (around the anus). Symptoms may include:

  • Itching and discomfort in the anal area.
  • Pain, especially while sitting or during defecation.
  • Appearance of small "bumps" or nodules around the anus.
  • Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet bowl after defecation.

It is important to remember that although small traces of blood are most often associated with hemorrhoids, any bleeding during pregnancy should be discussed with a doctor to rule out other, more serious causes.
