Problems with concentration

Overview

Problems with concentration during pregnancy: How to regain focus

If you have noticed that you become easily distracted, cannot focus on a work task, and reading a single page of a book takes three times longer than usual — this is another manifestation of the so‑called "pregnancy brain". Difficulty concentrating is a common complaint among expectant mothers and, like memory problems, has a fully real physiological and psychological basis.

Why is it so hard to concentrate?

Your ability to concentrate during pregnancy is attacked from several fronts:

  • Physiological changes. Hormonal fluctuations, especially early in pregnancy, can affect the functioning of neurotransmitters responsible for attention. This is compounded by constant fatigue — when the body is exhausted, the brain simply lacks the resources to sustain prolonged concentration.
  • Psychological load. Pregnancy is a time of huge emotional experiences and planning. Your brain is occupied with thinking about the upcoming birth, choosing a name, preparing the nursery, and many other issues. This "background noise" inevitably distracts from current tasks.
  • Reallocation of priorities. From an evolutionary perspective, your brain is retuning to a new, most important task — carrying and preparing for child care. Attention shifts from external tasks to internal sensations and needs. This is a natural process that helps shape the maternal instinct.
  • Sleep disturbances. Lack of quality sleep is one of the main reasons for impaired cognitive functions, including concentration.

How to help yourself?

Although it is impossible to completely get rid of this state, there are ways to improve concentration and reduce irritation from your own inattention. It is important not to demand too much from yourself and to be gentle with yourself. Try breaking large tasks into small ones, take frequent breaks, and write down important matters. Light physical activity also helps "air out" the head and improve focus.
