Memory problems
Overview
Memory problems during pregnancy: Why are you forgetting everything?
Forgetfulness during pregnancy is not a myth nor an excuse for jokes about "momnesia", but a real physiological condition confirmed by many studies. If you have started writing everything in a notebook, setting reminders for yourself and still forget to call your mother, know that you are in good company. This symptom is part of a broader phenomenon known as "pregnant brain".
Which type of memory suffers the most?
Research shows that pregnancy does not affect all types of memory equally. The most vulnerable are:
- Short‑term and working memory: The ability to hold a small amount of information in mind for a short period (e.g., a phone number just dictated to you, or a grocery list).
- Prospective memory: The ability to remember planned future actions (e.g., recalling that you have a doctor's appointment at 3:00 PM).
At the same time, long‑term memory (memories of past events) and semantic memory (general knowledge about the world) usually remain unchanged.
Causes of "pregnant" forgetfulness
The mechanism of this phenomenon is complex and includes both biological and psychological factors.
- Hormonal influence: High levels of progesterone and estrogen can affect the hippocampus — the brain region responsible for memory consolidation. Some studies show that these hormones can temporarily make the "recording" of new information more difficult.
- Prioritization of brain resources: During pregnancy your brain is re‑wired. It strengthens neural connections responsible for emotional bonding, empathy, and vigilance to the needs of the future child. This can be described as a redistribution of cognitive resources: the brain consciously "sacrifices" less‑important functions at the moment in preparation for motherhood.
- Sleep quality: Poor, fragmented sleep, especially in the third trimester, is one of the main reasons for memory decline. It is during deep‑sleep phases that information is transferred from short‑term to long‑term memory.
- Stress and anxiety: Chronic stress and high cortisol levels also negatively affect hippocampal function.
It is important to understand that these changes are temporary. Research shows that cognitive functions fully recover within a year after delivery. In the meantime — don’t be afraid to rely on notes, calendars, and phone reminders.
