Dry skin during pregnancy: Causes and care tips

Feeling of tightness, flaking, dull facial complexion and itching — many expectant mothers experience these signs of dry skin. Even if you previously had normal or oily skin, during pregnancy its type can temporarily change. This is due to hormonal restructuring and increased bodily needs.

Why does the skin lose moisture?

  • Hormonal changes: Fluctuations in hormone levels can disrupt the normal function of sebaceous glands and affect the skin's ability to retain moisture.
  • Increased blood volume: Your body needs more fluid to support the increased blood volume, and if you drink insufficient water, the skin may suffer from dehydration.
  • Skin stretching: The skin on the abdomen and breasts stretches intensely, making it thinner, vulnerable, and prone to dryness. This is often accompanied by itching.

Dry skin is usually not a medical problem, but it can cause significant discomfort. Proper care will help restore comfort and a healthy glow. Read about other physical changes in our guide.

Basics of caring for pregnant women's dry skin

The main task is to restore and maintain the skin's protective barrier. To do this, follow a few simple rules: use gentle cleansing products without aggressive surfactants, avoid hot water that strips lipids, and apply moisturizing cream to still‑wet skin after a shower. It is also important to drink enough water throughout the day. You will find more tips in the article "Beauty and Care During Pregnancy".
