Cough in Infants
Overview
Cough in Infants (3-12 months): Causes, Types, and When to See a Doctor
Cough in infants is one of the most common symptoms that parents encounter. It is an important protective reflex designed to clear the airways of mucus, irritants, or foreign bodies. Although in most cases cough is a sign of a common cold, in children under one year it requires close attention because their airways are very narrow, and any inflammation can quickly lead to complications.
Why do infants cough?
The causes of cough in children aged 3 to 12 months are varied:
- Viral infections (URIs). This is the most common cause. Viruses cause inflammation of the mucous membranes of the nose, throat, and bronchi, leading to mucus production. Cough in this case is a way to get rid of that mucus. It is usually accompanied by runny nose and sometimes fever.
- Post‑nasal drip. Mucus from the nasal passages drips down the back wall of the throat, irritating it and causing a reflex cough that often worsens at night when the child is lying down.
- Croup (acute laryngotracheitis). Viral inflammation of the larynx that causes swelling. Characterized by a specific, harsh, "barking" cough and noisy inhalation.
- Bronchiolitis. Viral inflammation of the smallest bronchi (bronchioles). Accompanied by frequent, dry, persistent cough, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
- Irritants. Tobacco smoke, dry air, dust, or strong odors can cause a dry, irritating cough.
Types of Cough: Dry and Wet
It is important to distinguish the type of cough, as this can help the physician in diagnosis:
- Dry cough: Often a sign of the onset of a URI, allergy, or irritation. The specific "barking" cough is characteristic of croup.
- Wet (productive) cough: Indicates the presence of sputum in the airways. This is a good sign that the body is clearing itself.
What Not to Do?
It is strictly prohibited to give infants under one year any mucolytics (medications that thin mucus) or expectorants without a doctor's prescription. Infants have a weak cough reflex and cannot effectively expel an increased volume of mucus, which can lead to its stagnation in the lungs and worsening of the condition.
It is also not advisable to use rubs with essential oils, as they can cause an allergic reaction or bronchospasm. Read about other respiratory symptoms in our dedicated section.
