Maternal Anxiety

Postpartum Anxiety in Mother

Worrying about a newborn is completely normal. However, when this concern escalates into constant, intense fear, intrusive thoughts and physical symptoms, it may be a sign of postpartum anxiety disorder. This condition occurs as frequently as postpartum depression, but it is discussed far less.

Symptoms of Postpartum Anxiety

  • Constant feeling of tension and inability to relax.
  • Intrusive, catastrophic thoughts that something bad might happen to the baby.
  • Constant checking: repeatedly checking whether the baby is breathing.
  • Physical symptoms: rapid heartbeat, dizziness, sleep problems.
  • Panic attacks.

The causes, as with depression, are complex: a sudden drop in hormones, sleep deprivation, and immense responsibility. This is a medical condition that can be successfully treated. If you recognize these symptoms in yourself, seek a psychologist or psychiatrist. More information can be found in the article "Postpartum Anxiety: Symptoms".
