Maternal Withdrawal

Overview

Maternal Withdrawal After Childbirth

Social withdrawal, or isolation, after childbirth is a condition where a woman loses the desire to communicate, avoids meeting friends, and seeks maximum isolation. It is more than just a wish to rest. It is an active avoidance of social contacts that can be a concerning symptom indicating deeper psychological issues, including postpartum depression.

Why does the desire to isolate arise?

  • Depression symptom: Anhedonia (loss of pleasure) and apathy make social interaction exhausting and meaningless.
  • Social anxiety: A woman may avoid people due to fear of judgment related to changes in her appearance, or due to anxiety about the child.
  • Severe fatigue: When a woman feels physically unwell, she may lack the resources for social activity.
  • Mismatch with expectations: If motherhood turned out to be different from what was expected, a woman may avoid contacts to avoid "performing for an audience".

If you notice that you are increasingly isolating yourself from the world and it brings you suffering, talk about it with close ones and seek psychological support. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Withdrawal".
