Indigestion after childbirth

Overview

Indigestion after childbirth: Adaptation of the digestive system

Feelings of heaviness, fullness in the stomach, belching and discomfort after meals — all these are manifestations of indigestion (dyspepsia) that can also trouble you after delivery. Your digestive system, like the whole body, goes through a period of adaptation and recovery.

Why does indigestion occur?

After the baby is born, internal organs begin to return to their usual positions. The intestines need to restore normal tone and motility after several months of slowed activity due to the effect of progesterone. New factors are added to this:

  • Irregular eating. A chaotic daily schedule, when you eat whenever you find a minute, can be stressful for the stomach.
  • Sleep deprivation and stress. They directly affect the functioning of the digestive system.
  • Changes in diet. You may start eating new foods or, conversely, restrict yourself because of breastfeeding.

The best way to help your digestion is to try to keep a routine. Eat small portions 4-5 times a day, chew food thoroughly, drink enough water. Gradual return to light physical activity also stimulates peristalsis. Read about overall postpartum recovery in our guide.
