Skin changes

Overview

Skin changes after childbirth: From acne to pigmentation

Your skin underwent significant changes during pregnancy, and after delivery this "revolution" continues. A sharp drop in hormone levels, stress, sleep deprivation and dehydration — all affect its condition. Some "pregnancy" problems disappear, but new ones may appear.

What happens to the skin?

  • Acne: If your skin was clear during pregnancy, the hormonal "crash" after delivery can trigger breakouts. Conversely, if you suffered from pregnancy acne, your skin condition may improve significantly.
  • Dryness and flaking: Dehydration caused by breastfeeding and lack of time for self‑care can lead to severe skin dryness.
  • Pigmentation: Melasma ("pregnancy mask") and dark line on the abdomen usually begin to fade, but this process can take up to a year. It is important to continue using sun protection.
  • Stretch marks: They will not disappear, but over time the red or purple marks become lighter and less noticeable.

It is important to be patient with yourself and your body. Give it time to recover. Continue following gentle skin care, drink enough water and try to eat a balanced diet. Read about overall physical recovery in our guide.
