Breast tenderness and changes

Overview

Sensitivity and changes in the breasts during pregnancy

Increased tenderness, swelling, feeling of heaviness and darkening of the nipples and areolae — this is one of the earliest and most common signs of pregnancy. Sometimes women notice these changes even before a missed period. Your body from the very first days begins extensive preparation for the most important mission — breastfeeding.

What exactly is happening?

These changes are driven by hormones, primarily estrogen and progesterone. Under their influence:

  • Milk ducts develop: The network of ducts inside the breasts expands, preparing for milk production.
  • Blood flow increases: The blood supply to the mammary glands intensifies, which can make the veins on the breasts more noticeable.
  • Fat tissue accumulates: The breasts increase in size not only due to glandular tissue but also fat.
  • Nipples and areolae change: They become darker and larger. Small bumps may appear on the areolae — these are Montgomery glands, which will secrete a lubricant to protect the nipples.

Discomfort is usually most pronounced in the first trimester, and then gradually decreases, although the breasts continue to grow throughout the entire pregnancy. You can read about other physical changes of the body in the corresponding section.
