Insomnia and Sleep Problems
Overview
Insomnia during pregnancy: How to regain healthy sleep
Sleep problems are one of the most common complaints of expectant mothers, especially in the first and third trimesters. When the body changes and thoughts are occupied with preparing for a new role, falling asleep and sleeping soundly becomes a real challenge. Feeling exhausted during the day and being unable to fall asleep at night is not your "flaw", but a natural consequence of deep physiological and psychological changes occurring in your body.
Why does sleep disappear? Causes in different trimesters
The mechanisms that disrupt sleep differ depending on the stage of pregnancy.
- First trimester: The main "culprits" are hormones. A sharp rise in progesterone levels has a sedative effect, which can cause daytime drowsiness but also fragment nighttime sleep. This is compounded by physical discomfort from nausea, breast tenderness, and, of course, frequent nighttime trips to the bathroom due to increased urination. The psychological factor also plays a huge role: anxiety and worry associated with the news of pregnancy can prevent falling asleep.
- Second trimester: It is often called the "honeymoon month" of pregnancy. Hormone levels stabilize, nausea subsides, and many women notice a significant improvement in sleep quality.
- Third trimester: Problems return with renewed intensity, but now their causes are mainly mechanical and physical.
- Physical discomfort: The large belly makes it difficult to find a comfortable position. Constant back pain, painful leg cramps, severe heartburn, and the baby's active movements at night turn sleep into fragmented rest.
- Restless legs syndrome: An irresistible urge to move the legs, which intensifies in the evening.
- Anxiety about labor: Worry about the upcoming birth, the baby's health, and the new role of mother can cause insomnia.
Understanding these causes is the first step toward adapting your lifestyle and finding relief methods. More details on organizing comfortable rest can be read in the article "Sleep during pregnancy".
