Cravings and aversions to food

Overview

Pregnant women's food "cravings": Cravings and aversions

A sudden, irresistible desire to eat something specific (often in strange combinations) or, conversely, a feeling of disgust toward foods you previously liked — this is a classic and very common pregnancy experience. These food "cravings" are the result of powerful hormonal changes that affect your taste receptors and sharpen your sense of smell. They are usually most pronounced in the first trimester.

Why does this happen?

There are several theories that explain this phenomenon:

  • Hormonal: Changes in hormone levels directly affect taste and smell perception.
  • Nutritional: Some scientists believe the body "signals" a deficiency of certain nutrients. For example, a craving for red meat may indicate a need for iron, and a craving for dairy products — for calcium.
  • Protective: Aversion to coffee, alcohol, or certain types of meat may be an evolutionary mechanism that protects the fetus from potentially harmful substances.

It is important that your diet remains varied, as we discuss in the article "Balanced nutrition during pregnancy". It is also worth knowing about foods to avoid. If you develop a craving for non‑edible items (chalk, soil), this condition, called "pica", requires immediate medical consultation.
