Headaches during pregnancy

Overview

Headache during pregnancy: Causes and safe relief methods

Headache, especially tension headache, often troubles expectant mothers, mainly in early terms. This is related to a whole complex of changes occurring in the body. It is important not only to know how to relieve the condition, but also to be able to distinguish ordinary pain from potentially dangerous symptoms.

Causes of headache

  • Hormones: Hormonal fluctuations early in pregnancy are one of the main causes.
  • Increased blood volume: Changes in pressure and circulation can also provoke pain.
  • Lifestyle: Fatigue, lack of sleep, dehydration, stress, abstaining from the usual dose of caffeine — all this can become a trigger.

In the second half of pregnancy, a severe headache that does not subside may be a grim sign of preeclampsia, especially if it is accompanied by high blood pressure and swelling. Read more about pregnancy complications in our special section.
