Cold hands and feet

Overview

Cold hands and feet during pregnancy: Circulatory paradoxes

Many pregnant women note that they are constantly hot, which is logical — metabolism speeds up, producing more heat. Even stranger may seem a symptom such as constantly cold hands and feet. This paradox has a fully scientific explanation and is usually not a cause for concern.

Centralization of circulation

The main cause of this phenomenon is blood redistribution in the body. During pregnancy your body has one primary priority: to provide optimal conditions for the baby's development. This means that the main flow of warm, oxygen‑rich blood is directed to vital organs — the uterus, placenta and fetus. As a result, peripheral vessels in the hands and feet may reflexively constrict to "save" heat and blood for the center. This leads to a feeling of cold in the extremities.

Other possible causes

  • Hormonal changes: Hormone fluctuations can affect the tone of small vessels, making them more sensitive to temperature changes.
  • Low blood pressure: Physiological hypotension, typical for the first half of pregnancy, can also contribute to a feeling of cold in the extremities due to overall lower pressure in the vascular system.
  • Anemia: Iron deficiency is one of the common reasons for feeling cold. If, in addition to cold hands and feet, you experience severe fatigue and weakness, you should discuss this with a doctor and have a blood test performed.

In most cases this is only a temporary inconvenience. However, if the cold is accompanied by a change in skin colour (whitening, bluishness) or pain, it may be a sign of Raynaud's syndrome, which should be reported to a physician.
