Nasal Bleeds During Pregnancy: Why It's Normal?

A sudden nosebleed (epistaxis) can scare anyone, especially an expectant mother. However, we want to reassure you: in most cases this is completely normal and common, directly resulting from the changes occurring in your body. About 20% of pregnant women experience this symptom.

Anatomy of the Issue: Vessels and Hormones

The mucous membrane of our nose is traversed by a dense network of tiny blood vessels—capillaries. During pregnancy, two powerful factors affect them:

  • Increased blood volume: The amount of blood in your body rises by 40-50%, creating higher pressure on the walls of all vessels, including the tiny capillaries in the nose.
  • Hormonal influence: The hormones estrogen and progesterone enhance blood flow to mucous membranes throughout the body. This leads to swelling and makes capillary walls thinner and more vulnerable. That’s why pregnant women often have nasal congestion (“pregnancy rhinitis”).

As a result of these processes, even minor irritation—dry indoor air, a cold, strong blowing, or even sneezing—can cause a capillary to rupture and start bleeding. This usually occurs in the second trimester. These bleeds are generally not heavy and stop easily, posing no threat to you or the baby.
