Headache in infants

Overview

Headache in infants: Is it possible?

Diagnosing a headache in an infant is practically impossible. The baby cannot complain, and nonspecific signs such as crying or irritability can be caused by dozens of other reasons. Therefore, physicians do not use the term "headache" for children of this age, but rather look for the underlying pathology that could cause discomfort in the head region.

What can cause head pain in an infant?

  • Infectious diseases: High fever during a cold, flu, otitis or sinusitis can cause discomfort resembling a headache.
  • Head trauma: Even a minor bump can be the cause.
  • Increased intracranial pressure: In rare cases associated with neurological problems, this can cause pain.

If the child constantly cries when you touch their head, bangs their head against the crib, or there are other concerning neurological symptoms, this warrants immediate medical attention. Read about general mechanisms in the article "Headache".
