Abdominal pain in infants

Overview

Abdominal pain in infants: Causes of discomfort

Abdominal pain is one of the most common reasons for crying and distress in infants. Their digestive system is still maturing, and many processes can cause discomfort. In the overwhelming majority of cases, abdominal pain is functional, meaning it is not associated with any disease.

Functional causes of abdominal pain

  • Gas: Accumulation of gas stretches the intestinal walls and causes spasms.
  • Constipation: Difficult or painful bowel movements.
  • Reflux: If the reflux is acidic, it can cause heartburn and pain.

Organic causes (rare but dangerous)

Sometimes abdominal pain can be a sign of a condition that requires medical intervention.

  • Food allergy: Causes inflammation in the intestine.
  • Intestinal infection (gastroenteritis): Usually accompanied by vomiting and diarrhea.
  • Intestinal obstruction (intussusception): Rare but dangerous condition.

If the abdominal pain is severe, persistent, accompanied by vomiting or other concerning symptoms, it is necessary to seek medical attention immediately.
