Abdominal pain

Overview

Abdominal pain after childbirth: What is normal?

Abdominal pain after childbirth is an expected phenomenon. Your internal organs return to their places, and the uterus contracts intensely to return to its pre‑pregnancy size. However, it is important to be able to distinguish normal recovery pain from symptoms that may indicate complications.

Normal causes of pain

  • Post‑partum uterine contractions (afterpains). This is a cramp‑like pain, similar to menstrual cramps, which is strongest during the first 2‑3 days after delivery and intensifies during breastfeeding. It is an absolutely normal and necessary process.
  • Pain after a cesarean section. This is pain in the area of the incision, which is a result of the surgery. More details can be found in the article "Pain after cesarean".
  • Gas and bloating. Bowel activity after delivery is slowed, which can cause discomfort and gas buildup.
  • Constipation. Straining due to constipation can also cause lower abdominal pain.

When to see a doctor?

Seek medical help immediately if abdominal pain:

  • Is very severe and does not subside with allowed analgesics.
  • Is accompanied by high fever, chills.
  • Is accompanied by heavy bleeding or discharge with an unpleasant odor.
  • Is accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

These may be signs of endometritis (inflammation of the uterine lining) or other infectious complications that require immediate treatment. The process of physical recovery requires careful attention to oneself.
