Wrist pain
Overview
Wrist pain after childbirth: "Mom's wrist"
Pain, numbness or weakness in the wrist and near the base of the thumb is a common problem known as "mom's wrist" or de Quervain's tenosynovitis. This condition arises from inflammation of the tendons responsible for thumb movement. It results from repetitive, unusual motions associated with caring for a baby.
What causes the pain?
The main cause is continuous and monotonous loading on the hand. When you lift a child, you often do it by moving the thumb outward, creating stress on the wrist. These movements are repeated dozens of times a day:
- Lifting the baby from the crib.
- Supporting the head during feeding.
- Carrying the baby in arms.
Hormonal changes after delivery and fluid retention can also contribute to swelling of the tissues around the tendons, increasing friction and inflammation. Sometimes these symptoms may be related to carpal tunnel syndrome that persisted after pregnancy, but the pain location in de Quervain's tenosynovitis is more specific (near the base of the thumb).
How to help yourself?
The key is to try to change your grip when lifting the child. Try to lift the baby by placing your palms under their back and buttocks, keeping the wrist in a straight, neutral position. Avoiding movements that provoke pain is essential for recovery.
Rest, wearing a special orthosis (splint) for the wrist and thumb, and applying cold can significantly relieve symptoms. If the pain is severe and does not subside, you should see an orthopedist or traumatologist.
