Postpartum Headaches

Overview

Postpartum Headaches: Hormones, Fatigue, and Stress

Headache, especially tension headache, is a very common complaint in the postpartum period. Your body and mind undergo a huge adjustment, and headache is one of the ways the body signals overload.

Most Common Causes

  • Sleep deprivation and fatigue. This is the number one cause. Chronic lack of sleep and physical exhaustion lead to constant tension of the neck and head muscles.
  • Hormonal readjustment. A sharp drop in estrogen and progesterone levels after delivery can trigger headaches.
  • Dehydration. Breastfeeding mothers often forget to drink enough water, which can lead to dehydration and headaches.
  • Poor posture. Tension in the neck and shoulders during feeding or carrying the baby (the so‑called "nursing mother’s neck") is a frequent cause of pain radiating to the occiput.
  • Stress and anxiety. Emotional load directly affects physical condition.

"Spinal" headache

There is a specific type of headache that can occur after epidural or spinal anesthesia. It is characterized by the pain being very strong in the upright position and almost completely disappearing when you lie down. If you notice this connection, be sure to inform your doctor.

It is important not to endure the pain. Discuss with your doctor which analgesics are safe during breastfeeding. Read about general physical recovery in our guide.
