Joint pain
Overview
Joint Pain After Childbirth: Body Adaptation to a New State
After delivery many women expect all "pregnancy" pains to disappear, but sometimes they encounter new discomfort — joint pain, especially in the knees, wrists, fingers, and feet. This is a common phenomenon linked to hormonal changes and new physical loads.
Causes of Postpartum Joint Pain
- Effect of the hormone relaxin. During pregnancy relaxin softened your ligaments and joints. After delivery its level gradually declines, but the joints may remain "loose" and unstable for several months. This can cause pain under load.
- Fluid retention. Swelling that persists in the first weeks after birth can create pressure in joint capsules, especially in the wrists, causing pain and numbness.
- New types of loads. Constantly holding the baby creates unusual stress on the joints of the hands, elbows, and shoulders.
- Breastfeeding. Sometimes pain in the small finger joints is linked to the hormone prolactin, although this connection is still being studied.
What to Do and When It Will Pass?
Usually this pain is temporary and resolves on its own within 3-6 months, when the hormonal background stabilizes and the body adapts to new loads. It is important to give yourself time for recovery.
Gradual return to physical activity, especially exercises that strengthen the muscles around the joints (yoga, pilates, swimming), can significantly improve the condition. However, if the pain is severe, accompanied by strong swelling, redness, or limited movement, you should see a doctor to rule out inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis.
