Allergies to cosmetics in newborns

Overview

Allergic reactions to cosmetic products in newborns

The newborn's skin is extremely delicate and vulnerable. Using care products, especially those with fragrances and dyes, can lead to the development of contact dermatitis. It is important to distinguish simple irritation from a true allergy.

Irritation or allergy?

Irritant contact dermatitis (more common) — is direct damage to the skin by aggressive components. Allergic contact dermatitis — is a true allergic reaction to a specific component. Most often the reaction is caused by fragrances, dyes, preservatives, and some plant extracts. The main rule for newborn skin care is "the less, the better". Avoid unnecessary products and choose hypoallergenic, fragrance‑free products. Before using a new product, perform a test on a small area of skin. For general care, read the article "Skin Care".
