Medication allergies in newborns
Overview
Allergic reactions to drugs in newborns
Allergic reactions to medications in newborns are relatively rare, but they can be very serious. The child's immune system is still immature, and any new drug is a potential allergen for them. It is important to distinguish true drug allergy from side effects.
How does a drug allergy manifest?
Usually the reaction appears on the skin as hives or another rash. In the most severe cases anaphylactic shock may develop. In newborns, reactions are most often caused by antibiotics (especially the penicillin group), which can be taken by both the breastfeeding mother and the infant herself. Auxiliary substances in syrups (colorants, flavorings) can also trigger a reaction. It is important to remember that many pediatric infections themselves are accompanied by a rash. Only a doctor can determine the cause.
